7 Mistakes Homeowners Make With Bug Infestations

August 10, 2026 by Spartan Animal & Pest Control

line of ants crawling along white baseboard in wooden floorYou saw a few ants on the counter or a nest forming under the porch railing, and figured it would sort itself out. Most bug problems don’t start as emergencies. They start relatively small, and that’s why they’re tempting to write off.

Things go wrong quickly and can turn into a big problem that costs real time and money to fix. The trouble is that bug infestations don’t work on a homeowner’s timeline. Whatever drew them in the first place stays as inviting as it was the day they showed up. Homeowners aren’t careless. They’re just busy, but bugs don’t wait for a convenient moment.

Essential Takeaways

  • Do not wait for a bug problem to become visible. When it is, that usually means it’s already established, not just starting.
  • Store-bought sprays kill what you see and leave the nest or entry point untouched.
  • Confusing one bug for another leads to the wrong fix entirely.
  • Removing a nest without sealing what drew it there just invites the next one.
  • A single treatment without a follow-up check rarely means the problem is actually gone.

Why Dismissing That Tell-Tale Ant Can Lead to a Nest of Problems

One ant on the counter is rarely the only ant in your home. It typically indicates that a colony has already found its way in. At this stage, it is scouting its territory. Early action can prevent a minor bug problem from becoming a larger infestation.

Waiting Until the Bug Problem Is Obvious

By the time bug activity becomes easy to see, a colony or nest has been established for weeks or even months. Common hiding places include wall voids, soffit gaps, and stacks of firewood against the foundation.

Carpenter ant colonies can spend years building satellite nests inside structural wood. During that time, homeowners may notice only one or two stray ants. The main colony often remains hidden until the infestation becomes more established. Catching the problem while it’s still small is always cheaper and easier.

Treating What You See, Not Where It’s Coming From

Grabbing a can of spray for the ants on the counter or the wasps by the door feels like progress, but it’s treating a symptom. Store-bought insecticides kill the insects you can reach and leave the nest, colony, or entry point completely intact.

The University of Massachusetts Extension integrated pest management program states that effective pest control begins by identifying the source of the infestation. Eliminating only the visible pests does not solve the underlying issue. Spraying the ants you can see is only part of the solution. Unless you remove what is attracting them, new ants will continue to appear.

Misidentifying the Pest

A Lot of Insects on Concrete SurfaceNot every large ant crawling across a windowsill is a carpenter ant, and not every wood-damaging insect is a termite. Still, homeowners mix these up constantly, and an improper identification leads to an ineffective response.

The National Pest Management Association notes that carpenter ants don’t eat wood the way termites do. Carpenter ants excavate wood to build smooth, hollow galleries for nesting. They leave behind small piles of fine, sawdust-like debris called frass, which collects beneath tiny exit holes. Unlike termites, carpenter ants do not build mud tubes. Treating a carpenter ant problem like a termite problem, or the reverse, wastes time while the actual issue keeps spreading.

Knocking Down a Nest and Calling It Done

Removing the nest eliminates the immediate problem. It does not eliminate what attracted the insects to that location. If those conditions remain, another colony may return later. Gaps under fascia boards, unscreened vents, and gaps around utility lines don’t disappear when a nest comes down. They stay open, waiting for the next colony to find them. A nest removal without exclusion work is a temporary fix.

Ignoring Moisture and Wood Conditions

Carpenter ants commonly infest wood that has been weakened by moisture. Leaking windows, damp crawl spaces, and water trapped beneath decking create favorable nesting conditions.

Removing the ants does not solve the underlying problem. The moisture problem also needs to be corrected. Otherwise, the damaged wood can continue to attract future colonies.

Many moisture problems remain hidden during routine inspections. They are often found behind walls, beneath porches, or in other concealed structural areas.

Ignoring Outdoor Conditions That Encourage Infestations

Conditions around the outside of a home can make it easier for insects to get inside. Firewood stacked against the foundation, mulch piled against the siding, and shrubs that touch the exterior create easy pathways for pests. These conditions are especially common around wooded properties and older homes.

Simple maintenance can help reduce that risk. Store firewood off the ground and away from the house. Cut back vegetation so it does not touch the exterior. Keep mulch several inches away from the siding to discourage insect activity.

Assuming One Treatment Means the Problem Is Gone

DIY sprays and one-time professional treatments can control visible insect activity. However, they do not always stop the source of the infestation. Long-term control depends on identifying and correcting the underlying cause. Without that step, the infestation may return. Corey Davis built Spartan’s process around a final walkthrough for exactly this reason.

After the removal and exclusion work is complete, inspect your property again. Confirm that every entry point has been properly sealed. Make sure there are no more signs of pest activity remaining. This final check helps ensure the infestation has been fully resolved.

Skipping it and overlooking any seals can allow pests to find their way back inside. That can result in another service call only a few months later.

Very professional I called for an appointment he was here the next day with everything needed. He understood how petrified I was over the rodent issue we were hearing in our walls. He was able to find and close up any possible outside entrances and placed outside poison and baits inside with more poison. He came 3 more times for check up and addressed my concerns and knock on wood he was right nothing has returned since. His work and prices are so worth it.

I Called Corey Tuesday evening and he was here at 9:30 the next morning for a wasp problem in and out of our home. This is our second time using him as the first time was for a mice issue and after his visit, we have been mice free for well over a year now. His knowledge of these critters is amazing, knowing their detailed habits. Wishing I could give a rating over 5 Stars. Look no further for any time if removal of extermination - you will find no better person for the job.

I had a wasp nest somewhere below my deck, bothering the family in the swimming pool. No way I was attempting to find the nest myself without a bee suit and flamethrower, so I called Corey at Spartan. He went under there armed with only a flashlight, found the nest and took care of it! Not only was he prompt, fast, efficient and effective, but the guy had guts of steel. Hoping to never encounter any more killer bees, rabid raccoons, attacking ants, or any other predators, but if I do, I’m glad I know I got Corey on my side!
